Why a privacy blog?

Four reasons: my degree, my husband, my mother, the Dramatists Guild, my daughter, and GI Joe.

  1. I spent my “first”, pre-privacy career using my long-awaited Psychology degree guiding crime victims through the criminal justice system. And while I found true reward in helping others, our justice system does not allow for a tremendous number of rewarding experiences. So I thought I’d give Wall Street a try – seemed fun (Footnote: that assumption was made pre-2008 mortgage crisis).
  2. My husband is a talented writer, podcaster, and blogger who reminds me – seriously, no less than once daily – that the privacy knowledge I have acquired since changing careers, though it seems common sense to me, is not intuitive to everyone and the general “web public” would benefit from hearing my plain-language explanations of the basics.
  3. Following each highly-publicized breach or scam, my mother (a very active member of said “web public”) routinely asks me to write clear, non-alarmist Facebook posts that she can share publicly to help her friends understand what is happening and how they can protect themselves. It has been rewarding to extinguish more than a few heads of hair on fire.
  4. At a recent speaking engagement with the talented membership of the Dramatists Guild, I was asked no less than five times if I had a website and then was repeatedly scolded for responding, “Not yet, but my husband encourages me to do so, seriously, no less than once daily.”
  5. My daughter is online and that gives me more pause than the thought of her becoming a crime victim or even walking alone on Wall Street late at night. We should all give pause, for ourselves and for those we live to protect – whether on a dark street or online.
  6. Fear comes simply from the unknown. The Great GI Joe said with regularity, “Knowing is half the battle.” Perhaps not so frequently as no less than once daily, but with just as much wisdom as my husband.

So this blog is meant to expose the unknown and give you courage. Let’s do this!
